Merry Christmas from the DH-Elves!

Snow is on the way, the turkey is on order and shops are bedecked with red and white. It can mean only one thing: Xmas is coming!

We know it’s November, but it’s never too early to start getting into the seasonal spirit. Don’t worry if you haven’t had chance to stock up on the mince pies and mistletoe: at DHL Servicepoint we’re going Christmas crazy! We’ve got lots of yuletide treats on the way to help you kick back, get in the mood, and enjoy a fun festive period.

Starting today, we’ll reveal a new Xmas treat every week: a bit like your very own DHL Servicepoint advent calendar. But a blog, not a calendar. And, erm, once a week rather than every day. And without those sickly chocolates you normally get. Look, you can’t have everything, alright? Just be grateful. When we were kids it used to be an apple and an orange wrapped up in a sock…

First up, we have elves. But not just any elves – these are our very own DH-elves (geddit? No? Oh come on! Really? DH-ELVES – like DHL? Oh, forget it…).

Can you help the elves make sure their parcels get delivered on time? Watch out for those snowballs!

Children in Need 2011 with DHL and Manchester United

Children in Need with DHL

Unless been hiding under a rock or have an aversion to the sight of big yellow bears, you’ll know it’s time once again for BBC’s annual Children in Need fundraiser. And with stars from Gary Barlow to JLS and the cast of Eastenders getting ready to kick off tonight’s TV marathon (BBC 1, from 7pm), it’s set to be the biggest and most successful campaign yet.

We thought we’d get in on the action and sprinkle a little sporting stardust of our own – with a little bit of help from Manchester United goal scoring legends Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke. Kicking off this evening, they’ll be teaming up with DHL employees to raise money for the Children in Need appeal.

DHL, Official Logistics Partner of Manchester United, is handing its main call centre at East Midlands Airport over to the BBC fundraiser for the evening. We’ll have over 200 employees – along with the Manchester United legends – on hand to take calls, raise money and help make a difference to the lives of children everywhere.

Andy Cole said: “It’s a pleasure to help raise money for a great cause like Children in Need. It has extra significance for me because I grew up not far from here in Nottingham. I hope we can do our bit to improve the lives of kids in this area and across the country.”

The DHL Customer Services call centre deals with around 3 million calls a year, making it one of the largest and most experienced centres to be involved in the appeal. This will be the third year running DHL have been involved, having raised £6500 in 2010.

DHL delivers memory garden to Stanton Vale pupils

DHL delivers memory garden to Stanton Vale pupils

As regular readers of this blog will know, DHL employees can be a creative bunch. As well as making sure your parcels get to their destinations in recordbreaking time, we’ve also got a bit of an eye for a masterpiece. Recently, we’ve been putting our creative skills to good use – by helping Stanton Vale School in Derbyshire create a special memory garden for pupils with severe learning difficulties.

Based on designs drawn up by the pupils themselves, DHL employees lent a hand with planting, painting and constructing the new garden. The aim was to create a space for pupils to play and learn, as well as remembering friends who’ve left.

Alan Wylie, Deputy Head Teacher at Stanton Vale said: “The garden has been completely transformed and the pupils adore the new features. The streams of butterflies, rows of flowers and a statuesque totem pole each provide the pupils with an exciting new way to interact and develop their sensory skills; while the pathways and benches offer an opportunity for tranquillity. We are eternally grateful to DHL for sponsoring this worthwhile project and for investing so much time to make sure everything was perfect for our pupils.”

DHL enlisted the help of one of its contractors to carry out some of the initial work, with nine members of the senior management team from the Aviation hub at East Midlands airport also investing a day’s worth of time in the garden.

Colin Beynon, Head of HR at DHL Aviation UK Ltd said: “This has been a great project to be involved in. It’s nice to have the chance to step away from the office and use our expertise and resources to make a real difference in the local community. We’re really pleased with the results and we hope the pupils at Stanton Vale enjoy their new garden.”

Rugby World Cup dream comes true for DHL youngster

Rugby World Cup 2011 kicks off with a little help from DHL, as one young boy’s dreams are made…

Rugby World Cup 2011 - Match Ball delivery

Teenager Elliot Webster was the envy of Rugby fans around the world last Friday when he was given the once-in-a-lifetime chance to present the match ball for the opening match of Rugby World Cup 2011.

Elliot, from Shepperton in Surrey, was handed the honour of delivering the match ball for the New Zealand vs Tonga fixture after being specially selected from thousands of youngsters around the world by DHL, the Official Logistics Partner of Rugby World Cup 2011.

We asked employees to nominate inspiring young people for the chance to be part of this historic sporting occasion. Elliot’s mother put him forward for all the incredible work he had done in caring for his father, who very sadly passed away 18 months ago, after he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Diseases.

Speaking to us before heading out to New Zealand, Elliot, a massive Rugby fan, captain of his school rugby team and regular winger at Esher Rugby Club, was giddy with excitement at the prospect of handing over the match ball. “It still hasn’t sunk in if I’m honest. The whole experience will be amazing – something I’ll never forget. I’m obviously an England fan, but getting the chance to meet the All Blacks – especially Dan Carter – will be fantastic,” he said.

Phil Couchman, CEO of DHL Express UK & Ireland said DHL were thrilled to make Elliot’s dream come true: “We were delighted to give Elliot this opportunity. It’s an experience he will hopefully remember and cherish for the rest of his life.”

What’s in the box? The answer finally revealed!

It’s been a brain-wrenching week or so for followers of the @DHLServicepoint Twitter stream. Set the challenge of figuring out ‘what’s in the box?’, with only a dastardly DHL riddle for help, there have been times when the mind cogs have been grinding so hard it’s like we’ve been able to hear them!

We’ve had a record number of entries and you’ve all done yourselves proud. It’s probably been our favourite Twitter competition ever. There were genuinely funny suggestions that had us laughing uncontrollably, and some inspired guessing that came surprisingly close to solving our impossibly devilish clues.

Sadly, there could only be one winner. Well, two to be precise – one for coming closest to getting it right, and the one that made us laugh the most (apart from those disqualified on the grounds of being unpublishable).

So congratulations to our winners, @Hellsbells_80 and @laurafoxgill, for their top-class efforts. Prizes will be on the way shortly (remember to drop us a line with your contact details, ladies!).

Don’t worry if you didn’t win – we’ll be doing it all again soon, with another top Twitter competition.

That just leaves one more thing to do: answer the question on everybody’s lips. What exactly was in that box?

What’s in the box? Tell us and win £100 in high street vouchers!

DHL Servicepoint box

When you spend your days delivering parcels across the world, it’s easy to let your imagination run riot.

To keep ourselves amused, we play a fun little game we like to call ‘What’s in the Box’. The rules are pretty simple: everybody takes it in turns to guess the contents of a package; the more outlandish, amusing, witty or weird, the better. The winner is the person who comes up with the best suggestion.

Recent winning examples include: a chocolate-coated llama, the space-time continuum and, perhaps least imaginatively, some wool.

To let you in on the fun, we thought we’d run a competition. All you have to do is tweet us with your suggestions – we’re looking for the most imaginative, fun and funny ideas you can muster. No need to think outside the box on this one though – it’s what’s inside that matters. Ha ha. Ha.

The prize? £100 in high street vouchers. Not bad for a few minutes of brainstorming fun, eh?

For a bit of inspiration, we’ve even put together a little riddle. The answer reveals the true answer and there’s a brilliant Flip Camera for the first person to get the correct answer. Be warned though: this is seriously tricky!

Red and yellow, but totally white

On the inside it’s black as night

Square on the outside but perfectly round

It’s completely silent but makes a sound.

Let the games commence!

Terms and conditions

  1. The prize consists of £100 in high street vouchers.
